There can, I think, be no objection to this young man residing at Stonyhurst College and beginning his studies there; but we ought to know what his intentions are regarding his future studies.
I think he should be written to stating that (the Secretary of State has no objection to his beginning his studies) he must first state definitely that he is going to study Medicine and where he proposes to spend his four years and what institutions he intends to attend in order to take his degree from a recognised medical school.

This is in response to a letter from Cardinal Vaughan.
It appears that Brother Victor of Stonyhurst College has written to say that they have a young man who wishes to begin his studies and that they have told him that he must first pass the matriculation examination.
The College authorities propose that instead of taking the preliminary examination, he should take the matriculation examination.
